What is Gambling?
Gambling is an activity that involves betting something of value on a chance event. The bet is usually against one’s own best interests. If the bet is correct, the person wins money. If it is incorrect, the person loses the bet.
Gambling dates back to ancient times. In China, rudimentary games of chance date back to around 2,300 B.C. In Japan, the earliest records of gambling go back to the 14th century.
Today, most people gamble at some point in their lives. Most often, they do so for fun. Some people gamble excessively. Others use gambling as a way to self-soothe uncomfortable emotions.
The gambling industry in the US hit an all-time high in the second quarter of 2021, with total revenues of $13.6 billion. Some areas of the country have stricter laws than others, so the legal age to gamble varies from state to state.
If you have a problem with gambling, there are several organizations that offer support. Some of these are free, and some offer counselling.
There are also many peer support groups. These are groups of people who have similar problems, and they can provide guidance and support. Some of these groups are patterned after Alcoholics Anonymous, but they are open to anyone.
You should never try to deal with a gambling addiction on your own. You should seek out help from friends, family, or a professional. Trying to overcome a gambling addiction on your own can lead to loss, and strained relationships.
